What is Catalina Coin Quest?

Catalina Coin Quest is a self-guided metal detecting experience in Avalon, Catalina Island. Guests rent a metal detector, receive a short training session, and explore designated beach areas in search of hidden items, including special Catalina Coins that can be redeemed for discounts on participating island activities and experiences.
 

How long is each rental session?

Rentals are available in 1-hour, 1.5-hour, or 2-hour sessions.
 

What are the hours of operation?

Catalina Coin Quest is available daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
 

Where do we check in?

All guests check in at 121 Clarissa Avenue, Avalon, CA.
 

What do Catalina Coins do?

Catalina Coins are special tokens you may find while metal detecting. These coins can be redeemed for discounts and perks at participating island activities, attractions, and local experiences, turning your treasure hunt into a reward-based island adventure.
 

What areas can we search?

Guests may search the following approved areas:

• South Beach

• Middle Beach

• Step Beach (when tide conditions permit)

• Sand areas near the Tuna Club
   

A map and recommended search zones are provided at check-in.
 

What is included with the rental?

Each rental includes:

• Metal detector

• Basic operating instructions

• Brief training session before departure

• Map of recommended search areas
   

Headlamps are available for an additional fee for evening or low-light use.
 

How much does it cost?

• $40 for 1 hour, $55 for 1.5 hours, $75 for 2 hours

• $50 refundable security deposit per metal detector

• A 10.25% city tax will be added at checkout

Is the deposit refundable?

Yes. The $50 security deposit is fully refundable when equipment is returned on time, undamaged, and in good working condition.
 

Are there any additional fees?

Additional fees may apply for:

• Late returns

• Lost, stolen, or damaged equipment
   

Are taxes included in the price?

No. Applicable sales tax is added at checkout.
 

What is the cancellation policy?

All bookings are non-refundable. No refunds are issued for cancellations for any reason.
 

What is the minimum age?

Participants must be at least 12 years old. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult.
 

What should I bring?

We recommend bringing:

• Water

• Sunscreen

• Sunglasses

• Fully charged phone
   

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes or beach-appropriate footwear are recommended. Sun protection is strongly encouraged.
 

Is training provided?

Yes. Every rental includes a short training session covering how to use the metal detector and basic search techniques before you head out.
 

How many detectors can I rent?

You can rent up to 6 metal detectors at one time, making it perfect for groups and families.
 

How do I book?

Reservations can be made online, by phone, or in person at the check-in location.
